Reading and Use of English

Duration

is 1 hour 30 minutes

Use of English

You have to demonstrate your proficiency in grammar and lexical structures in English and ability to use them. To do so you have to do different tasks working with both separate sentences and the whole text. Here you need to choose the right answers, fill in the gaps in texts, make up sentences competently.

Part 1

In this task you have to read a text with 8 numbered gaps (missing word or phrase) and choose the right answer for each gap from 4 different options.

Part 2

The second part consists of a text with 8 numbered gaps. You have to pick a necessary word for each.

Part 3

In the third part there is a text with 8 gaps, plus one gap as an example, and a list of hint words written on the right side of a text. These hints will help you pick the words to fill in the gaps.

Part 4

In this part you have to paraphrase 6 sentences so that its original meaning is not changed. After each initial sentence there is a key word. Then there is a sentence with a gap which you have to fill in using a keyword and initial sentence.

Reading

Passing the rest 4 parts (Reading) involves candidate’s demonstration of the ability to read and analyse texts taken from non-fiction and fiction, newspapers, and magazines. A test taker has to understand the main point of narration, the main idea of a text and important details, and also demonstrate understanding of author’s intention and text composition. The total number of words in texts is about 3,000. The given tasks may be of a few types: filling in the gaps in the text with right fragments, multiple choice, choosing the right answer to a specific question.

Part 5

In this part you have to read the text and answer 6 questions by picking one of four given options. A sequence of questions follows the information given in a text.

Part 6

In this part you have to match 4 small texts with questions; answers are already given in the text. Read attentively each passage and pick the right question to it. The number of questions is the same as the number of texts.

Part 7

In this part you have to read one long text with a few gaps and define which of the given passages below matches each gap the best. A key moment in this task is understanding a text structure and topic development. For task complication there is an extra passage which does not fit any gap.

Part 8

In this part you have to read 1 text separated into a few paragraphs or consisting of a group of short texts. Below there are 10 questions, each of them must be matched with each text containing information for the answer.

Writing

With the help of Writing your ability to write compositions, letters or emails, reviews, processing formal documents for different addressees and of various topics is checked.

Duration

1 hour 30 minutes

Part 1

A compulsory Writing part consists of writing a composition for 220-260 words according to additional information to it. The task contains a situation, read it carefully and with the help of notes write a composition. It is important to use two points from suggested in the notes, explain which is more important and rationalize your choice.

Part 2

In the second part there is a choice of one of 4 options (a letter or an email, a sentence, a review, or a report). For each option there is a reader, a context, and the purpose of writing. Each task is like a situation with a context which must be developed in the answer. The number of words to write is 220-260.

Listening

Duration

about 40 minutes

Part 1

In this part there are three recordings with interacting conversation. The duration of each is about 1 minute. After each recording you have to answer 2 multiple-choice questions by choosing one answer.

Part 2

There is a long run which lasts 3 minutes. Paying attention to specific words and phrases you have to answer eight questions.

Part 3

Listening to the conversation between 2 or 3 people you have to answer 6 multiple choice questions containing 4 options which express an opinion or attitude of people to the topic of the conversation.

Part 4

The given part of the test implies listening to 5 short recordings and doing 2 tasks. Each recording is of a general topic, but speakers will be different. You need to choose a right answer to each task from 8 given options.

Speaking

Speaking is passed by the candidates in pairs and is accepted by two examiners one of whom doesn’t take part in a discussion but assesses your answer according to 4 criteria.

Duration

15 minutes for each pair of candidates
