Cambridge English Proficiency, also known as CPE, is the most complicated exam in General English on Cambridge English scale.

CPE is an exam which proves that a candidate’s proficiency in English is so high that he/she can communicate confidently on the highest professional and Academic level. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CPE equals to C2 level.

is 1 hour 30 minutes

Use of English

Part 1

In this part you have to choose one word of the 4 possible options to fill it in the text.

Part 2

Here you to have to fill in the text with the most suitable words by implication and grammatically.

Part 3

Fill in the text with a word created from the suggested one at the end of each line, which has to be enhanced.

Part 4

There are 2 sentences. The first must be completed in such a way that it means the same as the second one. It is necessary to use the given word while completing. It is possible to complete a sentence with 3-8 words.


Part 5

Answer the multiple choice questions to the text by picking a right one out of 4 suggested options.

Part 6

In this part you need to place the missing paragraphs in the text by choosing 7 out of 8 paragraphs to paste.

Part 7

Match affirmations with the parts of the text; each part may be referred to more than 1 affirmation.



1 hour 30 minutes

Part 1

In this part you have to read 2 small texts, about 100 words each. Based on the content of this material you have to write an essay with 240-280 words where the key moments of both texts must be evaluated and your own ideas added.

Part 2

There are 4 questions to choose from: an article, a letter, an answer or a review. The total amount of words in this part is 280-320. In the last question you have a choice to describe one of the maintained texts beforehand. Their format may be the same as of previously listed tasks for the second part. Annually definite books are confirmed for a review.
For the test taken in January 2016-December 2017 they were:
Family Album by Penelope Lively, any edition;
The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, any edition or film of 2013 by director Baz Luhrmann as an addition to the book or instead of it.
For the test taken in January 2017-December 2018 they are:
Brooklyn by Colm Toibin, any edition or a movie of 2015 by director John Crowley as an addition to the book or instead of it;
The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman, any edition or film of 2016 by director Derek Cianfrance as an addition to the book or instead of it.

Part 1

In this part you have to listen to 3 short recordings (1 minute each) and then answer 2 questions. The recordings are of different topic not connected with one another.

Part 2

It is a monologue which lasts 3-4 minutes. Using its information you have to fill in the gaps in 9 sentences.

Part 3

You have to listen to the conversation between a few people (it lasts 3-4 minutes) and then answer 5 multiple choice questions with 4 options each.

Part 4

In this part there are 5 short themed monologues (about 35 seconds each) and two parallel tasks with a different focus. Each multiple-matching task requires the selection of the 5 correct answers out of suggested 8.


Speaking is passed by the candidates in pairs and is accepted by two examiners one of whom doesn’t take part in a discussion but assesses your answer according to 4 criteria.

Part 1

In the first part an interlocutor asks a few questions one by one- to you and another candidate. You mainly have to talk about yourself.

Part 2

In this part, following the instructions of interlocutor, you have to describe 1 or more given images and also do the task with another candidate in the form of a pairwork.

Part 3

This part implies the work with the card and the task on it and you have to speak about it for 2 minutes. Then another candidate comments your answer and interlocutor asks questions on the same topic to both examinees. After that another candidate does the same task, and the first one comments. Then an interlocutor asks the questions again.
