A2 Key (KET)

A2 Key (KET) is the first exam from the main set of Cambridge English which equals to Pre-Intermediate or A1-A2 level according to CEFR. KET exam proves proficiency in English on a basic level within the skills of everyday communication. KET exam is a great chance to solidify knowledge of English language and make the first step to English proficiency on a professional level.

This exam uses vocabulary of daily situations. Among 4 skills which are tested are Writing, Reading, Listening, and Speaking. Exam checks and evaluates the level of proficiency on practice which will be useful at work, studying, and travelling.

Reading and Writing

Duration

1 hour 10 minutes

Part 1
(questions 1-5)

Tasks in this part consist of explaining the meaning of the notice, sign or a short text which can be seen at the railway station, on the roads, in the airports, schools, shops, and etc. Also, there are 5 presented sentences which must be matched with entitled texts.

Part 2
(questions 6-10)

It is a vocabulary test. There are 5 sentences with a missing word in each; your task is to choose one right word from 3 options.

Part 3
(questions 11-15 )

Skills to use English in daily life are checked. Your task is to choose the right answer to a common question.

Part 4
(questions 16-20)

In the forth part it is necessary to insert the missing phrases into the dialogue on an everyday subject.

Part 5
(questions 21-27)

The fifth part consists of a long text (about 230 words) and 7 multiple choice questions, so it is necessary to choose a correct answer from a few options. Also, there may be 7 statements after reading which you need to define whether each of them corresponds to the information stated in the text.

Part 6
(questions 28-35)

It tests grammar knowledge by reading a text with missing words and choosing the right word from three offered options.

Part 7
(questions 36-40)

It tests using lexical resource in writing. You must pick the right word for each out of 5 simple definitions on one topic and write it in a correct way.

Part 8
(questions 41-50)

It tests grammar knowledge and vocabulary. Here you must read a small text and fill it in with the missing words.

Part 9
(questions 51-55)

It tests writing and reading skills. Your task is to read 1 or 2 small texts and fill in the form using the information from the texts.

Part 10
(question 56)

In the final part of this section you need to write a short message, about 25-35 words, e.g. a friendly postcard or a note. Instructions will tell you what to write and to whom.

Listening

Duration

About 30 minutes

Part 1
(questions 1-5)

The task of the first listening part involves listening to 5 short dialogues, comprehending information, and giving answers to questions of each dialogue.

Part 2
(questions 6-10)

In the second part you need to listen to the dialogue and match the words from two lists (e.g. names of people and dishes they were eating)

Part 3
(questions 11-15)

In this task you need to remember some specific information from informal conversation of two people and answer to given questions by choosing a right answer from 3 possible options.

Part 4
(questions 16-20)

In the forth part of listening you have to listen to the dialogue and write some specific information by completing a form. It can be dates, numbers, prices, words, and etc.

Part 5
(questions 21-25)

This part is similar to the previous one but instead of the dialogue you will hear a monologue.

Speaking

Speaking is passed in pairs and evaluated by two examiners.

Duration

8-10 minutes

Part 1

This part takes 5-6 minutes. You are required to demonstrate your skills to use English while getting acquainted with people. You need to give a general information about yourself, tell about your interests or about daily life.

Part 2

This part lasts for 3-4 minutes. You have to talk to another candidate on a given topic, which is indicated on the card with a task, which an examiner will give you. You need to ask and answer questions.
