Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT)

TKT is a test of teaching knowledge. Preparing for TKT can help you learn more about teaching English and increase your confidence as an English language teacher.
A flexible, modular format TKT is divided into modules which are tested separately.

You can take them all or as many as you need. There’s total flexibility in how and when you take the modules — you get a certificate for each one you complete.

TKT is suitable for teachers of English in primary, secondary or adult teaching contexts and is intended for an international audience of non-first language or first language teachers of English.

Candidates taking TKT will normally have some experience of teaching English to speakers of other languages.

TKT may also be taken by:

pre-service teachers

teachers who wish to refresh their teaching knowledge

teachers who are moving to teaching English after teaching another subject.

Content of TKT

TKT consists of three modules. For each module, candidates are required to answer 80 questions by selecting a letter for the correct answer. As TKT tests candidates’ knowledge of teaching rather than their proficiency in the English language or their performance in classroom situations, candidates are not required to listen, speak or produce extended writing when taking TKT.

Module One

Background to language teaching tests your knowledge of the terms and concepts of English language teachi ng. It focuses on the factors underpinning the learning of English.

Module Two

Planning for language teaching focuses on the knowledge and skills you need to plan lessons. It also looks at assessment and resources that can guide your lesson planning.

Module Three

Classroom management. Tests your knowledge of what happens in the classroom during language learning, and the teacher’s role in classroom
