Most of our lesson are based on course books. It can provide some comfort, especially for those who just have started their teaching paths, because they give us a nice set of tasks to work with. Is it enough though?
In the other hand, course books usually come with a great number of additional materials: photocopiable, printables, extra tasks for grammar and vocabulary. So ho to chose what we really need?
In addition to that, with the development of social media, we can see examples of other teachers using course books in various creative ways. Adapting the tasks through a number of online tools. But is it really a must, even in our digital era?

Promise that you won’t run away when you see the next word in this abstract, which is... pronunciation. Even if you’ve never really done much pronunciation in your general English teaching, please give me a chance to convince you that ‘pron’ is not only essential but actually good for you—let alone your learners.
To put it bluntly, you simply cannot speak without pronouncing. Of course, you can pronounce without speaking—and the latter is precisely what has given pronunciation such a bad name. But the sooner you accept that ‘pron’ needs to happen every time your student opens their mouth, the sooner you’ll start noticing opportunities to work on it absolutely everywhere, on every page of your coursebook, in every lesson, and definitely with any oral activity you orchestrate.
Make no mistake: I am not about to suggest that you do pronunciation at the expense of other vital work (grammar, vocabulary, or skills). My main point is that it takes very little extra time to do meaningful pronunciation work—it’s mostly about not wasting opportunity! And it’s going to make a huge difference to you and your students, provided it’s done in very small but very frequent chunks. Sounds are everywhere, sounds are helpful, sounds are crucial. Sounds good?

Inclusive classrooms have now become the norm and all learners have their own individual needs, special or otherwise. However, not all children are diagnosed and, even if they are, we are not always informed. Many times, it is us who raise the alarm when difficulties arise, but we often do not recognise the complexity of the support requirements, which could result in lifelong problems, including lower academic achievement (Frolov and Schaepper, 2021).
How can we identify the issues? This talk will offer some insights to possible answers to these questions and some of the considerations for balancing our classrooms.

Today, the English Language is changing and evolving at an unprecedented rate. This session explores aspects of contemporary English pertinent to the ELT classroom and looks at how we can, should we wish to, introduce this into our teaching. Along the way, we will consider the notion of non-standard grammar, look at trends in new and repurposed words and phrases, explore the rise of the affix and share our thoughts on some of the buzz-speak that currently abounds.

While preparing students for B1 and B2 exams many teachers struggle to improve their students’ writing skills. They teach them how to write texts of different genres, check countless writing pieces, and write comments, but these don’t seem to be effective.
During this training session, we will look at what could be the possible reasons for that, and how to address them in order to remove the block.
We will look at:
— Typical reasons for blocking writing skills development
— Practical ways to address the problems

Have you ever noticed your students working in pairs with nearly zero understanding why they do it? Another problem is that they usually have a set of well prepared questions for a discussion, but their answers are plain and short. It doesn't always mean they do not speak, it means that they do not communicate. In this session we will look dwell upon the meaning of a speaking club to a student and a teacher separately. We will come up with an effective structure of a good speaking club and look through some tips that will definitely improve your understanding of communication skills.
Key Takeaways:
- A better understanding of communicative skills for teachers and students;
- Practical framework for speaking clubs of all levels;
- Technical first aid kit for teachers;

Everyone knows this teaching mantra that instructions should be simple and graded, students' activity should be monitored actively and closely and that feedback on tasks should be snappy and useful. We often treat these steps of a task (instructions, monitoring and feedback) as somewhat disconnected classroom routines, which might make our teaching mechanical and are likely to lead to lowered student performance. However, if to take a broader look, together they make a task cycle and are viewed as part of a single unit (task), and in this way each of them gets an additional powerful meaning.
In the workshop, we will look at what effective teaching (and planning) decisions to make to ensure a well-connected and meaningful task cycle and:
- how to prepare and deliver contextualised instructions having in mind the end result;
- how to monitor purposefully and help students learn;
- what is evidence of learning and how monitoring informs feedback;
- how to provide feedback that feeds both back and forward.
This workshop will be useful both for pre-CELTA teachers and those who have experience of post-CELTA teaching.

Grade 5s might be fun to be with as they already start perceiving the world as mini-adults. But are they really that fun to be in the classroom with? What can we, teachers, expect from those who just moved from their Primary School and stepped on a new learning bridge – their Secondary school? In this workshop, we will talk about the main development milestones of your Grade 5s, to what extent the current cousebooks meet their needs and how we, teachers, can help them bridge that learning gap between Primary and Secondary.
This workshop is aimed at teachers who work with NUS as well as those who teach English to pre-teens.

Language practice makes up a huge part of any ELT syllabus. Even though modern coursebooks provide a bunch of activities (e.g. controlled and freer practice) to serve this purpose, it is essential to understand how language practice works and how to make it an effective stage in the lesson, which goes beyond the coursebook.
In this workshop, we'll focus on practice stages of language lessons (grammar, vocabulary, functions) and will aim to answer the main questions:
- What makes language practice effective?
- What range of activities could be employed to help students use new language?
- How to skillfully manage practice stages?
The workshop will be very helpful for teaching professionals with little and some experience but will also help deepen and structure the language practice system for those being in ELT for quite some time and get their questions answered.

We all know the feeling — some days, you’re unstoppable. Everything you do just seems to work somehow, and it feels like you can’t do any wrong. Unfortunately, this isn’t every day that we teach, and some days it’s quite the opposite. Some days, the lesson, for some reason, just isn’t as successful as you would like. Moreover, an important part of teacher education and development (and a key feature of both the CELTA and Delta courses) is self-reflection and the ability to deconstruct your lesson effectively. Having observed hundreds of teachers in a variety of contexts, I’ve found that there are certain things which, more often than not, prevent even skilled teachers from being as successful in the classroom as they can be. In this practical session, participants will examine a few case studies of real lessons which didn’t fully meet their aims in order to develop a better understanding of key teaching concepts, and will leave with a framework for self-reflection to help them more accurately look back on their own teaching so that they can grow even more than they already are.
Key takeaways:
— A better understanding of common problems that hold lessons back
— Practical tips and ideas to prevent or address these issues
— A simple, practical framework for self-reflection to apply in everyday teaching

Teachers know too well that writing isn’t something our students look forward to. It often requires lots of hard, tedious work; it is time-consuming. The problem becomes even more challenging if your class consists of rebellious teenagers.
We are going to talk about the ways of humanizing the process of teaching writing to teenagers and combining some serious work with the elements of fun. Two experienced CELTA trainers, Eleonora Pazyak and Helen Taranenko, are going to share their ideas with you.

It is a common belief that we tend to teach the same way as we were taught at school and at university. We unconsciously reproduce the same patterns that our teachers used, and we rarely judge whether these methods are effective or reasonable. Even if we do, very often we don’t know how to teach in a different way. In this training session we are going to look at common patterns that Ukrainian teachers practice in class, and discuss how effective they are, and whether there are better alternatives to what we are used to experiencing and doing ourselves.

Undoubtedly, correction is an integral part of teaching and learning processes, especially important for the latter, since it helps learners improve their language qualitatively and move from one level to another with confidence. Delayed correction may indeed be considered art which isn’t easy to master, and the more is learnt about it, the more can be discovered – and this process is endless. However, there are some nuts and bolts that should be familiar to every teacher who aims to be effective in class. These include understanding of principles of delayed correction as such, preparation (how to choose language to be improved and what language aspects to focus on), performance (format of exercises and effective correction techniques) and post-performance (what should be done after the correction slot to make it work for learners). All of these will be dealt with in the workshop and practical ideas offered to help teachers upgrade their understanding and application of delayed correction in the ELT classroom.
Key takeaways:
– principles of delayed correction
– what to focus on in delayed correction and how to do it
– delayed correction done – what’s next?

2.7% – these are what many of our classes look like. More specifically, if your learners – like many of mine – study 4.5 hours a week, this is exactly how much of their week they spend in class. A tiny 2.7%. It should come as no surprise that our learners spend much more time out of class than they do in class – and we usually don’t feel like we have enough time in class do to what we need! In this session, we’re going to look at a set of skills which fall under the category of learner training – that is, how we teach out students to be better learners of a language themselves, through things such as how to exploit an online dictionary, how to maximise class time, or even how to study effectively outside of class.

Чи справді варто вчити слова списками? Коли переклад допомагає навчанню, а коли починає заважати? Читання вголос — це про reading skills чи про щось зовсім інше? Чи мають диктанти місце на сучасному уроці англійської?
Цей вебінар — структурована розмова двох тренерів про типові, але суперечливі методичні рішення у викладанні англійської. Ми зібрали запитання, які викладачі ставлять собі роками, але рідко отримують на них чіткі й аргументовані відповіді.

When we are starting out as teachers, or even when we proceed to take part in other teacher training programmes, we learn certain rules: “You need to speak simply, or “grade the task, not the text”, or even “you should ask instruction checking questions (ICQs) when giving instructions to check that students know what to do”. But, are all of these things true ALL of the time? In this webinar, we’re going to look at some of the ”golden rules” of teaching that we learn early on in our careers and examine them critically from an evidence- and research-based perspective - and, in doing so, understand how we can better support our students in their lessons. Participants will leave with practical suggestions for how to interact effectively with and create learning materials for a variety of levels and contexts.

Equally, gathering feedback on how well students have learned a topic is essential in enabling teachers to address any misunderstanding and provide the proper challenge in future lessons. 10:30 –11:30 PLENARY 🟡 Jamie Keddie "Stories and critical thinking"
It has been said that stories are to humans what water is to fish. We are immersed in them, shaped by them – even controlled by them. But we are not always aware of how deep the influence goes. And just as water can become polluted, so too can our story environment.
In this practical talk, we will explore why stories matter, how they work, and how they shape our perceptions. You will leave with ready-to-use teaching ideas to help your students recognise how storytelling operates in contexts such as advertising, politics and the media.
11:30 – 11:45 Short break
11:45 – 12:30 Workshops
🔵 Andrii Pigrariev
"Students’ emergent needs: addressing or ignoring?"
‘Teaching the plan or the students?’ This is the question that teachers ask themselves quite often. Being reactive to varying classroom situations and addressing students’ spontaneous language use is what defines a supportive and effective teacher. However, is it the teacher's intuition or a set of well-learned and time-proven strategies that helps? Should such emergent needs be catered for in the moment or just ignored? What teacher interventions to apply in order to address them skillfully?

"How the Grade teaching team works: an inside look"

In a live conversation format, we’ll share real cases, insights, and behind-the-scenes stories — honestly and without sugarcoating. Whether you work with teachers or teach yourself, this session will be both interesting and useful.

"A story-based approach to video" (Part 1)
What is it about language teachers and video? Why do we feel the need to turn to sites like YouTube as a source of material and inspiration? Adverts, short films, and TikTok videos might be fun and entertaining. But why bring them into the language classroom?
The answer is simple. Like all human beings, language learners need narrative. As teachers, we intuitively know this and video provides us with a constant stream of visual stories to engage them.
In this workshop, you will learn a simple but original approach called 'videotelling' which brings the story and the people to the front of the class. You will learn to maximise students' engagement with the narrative and get them speaking, writing and critically thinking.
🔵 Nataliia Liashko
“Ready, steady, speak!” Setting up fluency tasks clearly
Clear task instructions can make or break a fluency activity. In this practical workshop, you will explore simple ways to set up communicative tasks that truly get students talking. We will look at common problems with task instructions and discover how to avoid them. You will practise breaking down tasks into clear steps, using models and checks to make sure students understand. Together, we will try out techniques for giving instructions and setting up speaking tasks with confidence and clarity. By the end of the session, you will be equipped with ready-to-use ideas to bring fluency tasks to life in your own classrooms.

"Beyond the Lesson Plan: Empowering Teachers Through Feedback"
There is no doubt that feedback is a powerful tool for teachers' professional development. Yet, it is very often perceived as a routine post-observation exercise activity. Even more, a lot of teachers find it daunting or even intimidating.
In this interactive session, we will move beyond this perception and show how feedback can become a flexible, personalised, and empowering tool for ongoing professional growth.
We will explore four key feedback styles—directive, facilitative, collaborative, and dialogic—and reflect on when and how each can be used most effectively in mentoring relationships. Through case-based group work and guided discussion, we will analyse how to tailor their feedback approach to suit different teacher profiles, levels of experience, and developmental goals. Apart from that, the participants will be equipped with a practical toolkit of ready-to-use resources, including a mentoring checklist, feedback sentence starters, etc.

How can teachers ‘get together, how can students ‘be together’ and how can people in times of trouble come together to get through it? That’s what we’ll examine both professionally and personally in this talk.

9:30 – 10:00 — Registration and Welcome of Participants
10:00 – 11:00 — 🟢 Grammar Fundamentals Workshop
This session sets the scene and takes a brief overview of what grammar fundamentally actually is and why we have it. We will then briefly look at the ‘big four’ – the four key elements of discourse – and at how and why we would do well to introduce this into our teaching.
Break
11:10 – 12:10 — 🟢 Tense Stuff Workshop
This session looks at how we actually use tense, aspect and other verb forms, such as gerunds and infinitives and ‘will’, and relates their real-world use to how they are all-too-often described in ELT material.
12:10 – 12:40 — Coffee Break
12:40 – 13:40 — 🟢 Bringing Spoken Grammar into the Classroom Workshop
This session looks at some key aspects of spoken grammar and presents ideas for incorporating them into our teaching. This could be as an actual ‘spoken grammar’ lesson, a brief aside or tangent to our existing grammar lessons or something in between. This session will complement the following day’s conference plenary on the same topic.
Break
13:50 – 14:50 — 🟢 Contemporary and Non-standard Grammar Workshop
This session looks at some key recent and ongoing changes in grammar and at how we can incorporate this into our teaching. We will consider whether or not to teach some of these contemporary uses and will consider the usefulness in our teaching of the concept of ‘non-standard grammar’.

Teachers don’t need to be motivated!
Once a colleague told me she doesn't need to be motivated, but the reality for many teachers is quite different. Despite their passion for teaching, educators often face numerous barriers that hinder their professional growth.
In this session, we will explore the paradox of teacher motivation, why it often falters, and how schools can effectively support their staff. Learn how our programs provide comprehensive support and numerous opportunities for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for teachers in diverse educational settings, from large schools to private tutoring.
14.00–15.00 Session 2. Anna Oleksiuk
Clarification of difficult concepts and memorising techniques
Have you ever experienced difficulties clarifying vocabulary? What are the factors that make a word difficult both to remember and to teach? What can we do to help our students to remember words forever? We are going to answer all of those questions and talk about practical techniques for clarification and memorising. Of course, everything will be based on scientific researches and my and my colleagues' experience. It could be useful for both pre- and post-CELTA graduates as well as teachers of all age groups.
15.00–16.00 Session 3. Yuliia Pronina
Bringing CLIL to YL classroom. Are you ready?
Young learners are, undoubtedly, motivated to learn while collaborating, experimenting and trying out new things. That’s the main reason why teaching young learners usually requires the teacher to find efficient ways to incorporate subject content into language lessons. The teacher always looks for the most effective techniques and methods to create opportunities enabling students to pick up the language in a natural environment. We believe that CLIL is an approach that can offer natural situations for language development.
In this practical session, we’ll delve into the core concepts of CLIL. We’ll focus on

Teaching with a twist: Make a coursebook lesson an exciting journey.
There is no perfect coursebook, and even the best ones need effort to make the magic learning happen in a lesson. In this session, a team of creative and enthusiastic teachers will share tips on how to spice up typical coursebook activities to motivate learners and break the routines.
Personal approach to lessons, happy teacher – happy students! - Maryam Kiazymova
A lot of teachers and students are most probably tired of books that feel too pristine and detached from reality. Teachers might often wonder how much more interesting their lessons would become if they put a bit of their personality into the activities they do in class. There is nothing more exciting for students than a teacher who shows their real self and shares their passions with them. So, how do you put the “you” into your practice activities and make your students benefit from it? Let me share my experience with you!
Transforming boring exercises for revision into dynamic and engaging activities - Bohdan Orel
Revision is a crucial part of the learning process. Grammar recycling and vocabulary recirculation are the key components of effective revision. The challenge for the teacher is to organise activities which will not only help students improve their English but also create a positive and dynamic atmosphere for the rest of the lesson.
In this session, we will be taking a look at several revision activities which are applicable both in offline and online classes. We will be analysing the way they are carried out, what is so special about them, and what issues might come up as you proceed.
Join me for this part of the Grade Teacher Talks and make your lessons more fun!
Making Coursebooks Work for You: Practical Adaptation Techniques - Yuliia Makovii
In this session, we will discuss adapting materials from coursebooks to your classroom. We will talk about what and why to adapt, and address some typical issues teachers face in that area. I will share my experience applying these solutions into practice using examples from real coursebooks. And as a bonus, I will share a low preparation and time-efficient way of setting context for any grammar topic in case your coursebook is lacking it.

11.00 — 12.30 Context is King: Optimizing Language Presentation in Teaching Systems by Lidiya Simak
The CELTA course offers some effective means of teaching grammar and vocabulary without translation. Context is the key component of language presentation. In this session, we will look at using context for teaching systems and discover ways to analyse whether the context provided by a coursebook, or created by a teacher, is appropriate to convey meaning. We will also develop a clear algorithm for creating the context that will work for any kind of grammar or vocabulary you need to teach.
12.30 — 14.00 Asking Smart by Andrii Pigariev
There are no doubts that asking questions has undeniable benefits for the ELT classroom. They obviously help reduce teacher talk and provide students with opportunities to speak. As well as that, questions engage students mentally so that learners become an active part of learning and in the end start asking questions themselves.
Asking smart, however, isn’t just about producing questions to involve students. It is about having students in mind when designing them and anticipating answers. ICQs, CCQs and elicitation questions* aren’t just there to please your academic director or mentor observing your lesson or a trainer on a teacher training course such as CELTA. Asking meaningful, cognitively challenging and accessible questions encourages students to think and makes learning so much more desirable for them. And this is what we are going to explore during the workshop.
By the end of the workshop, the participants will have learned:
– how to ask meaningful questions and keep students engaged
– how to ask questions that students understand but at the same time cognitively challenging for them
– how to exploit wait time to encourage students to share more
– how to ensure that eliciting, ICQs and CCQs work for the purpose they are designed for

14.30 — 16.00 Small Children. Big Questions by Olena Lysytsia
Nowadays, language proficiency exams are more and more in demand.
Younger and younger people are taking B2 proficiency exams every year, and it seems that the little ones who have recently joined your class are already preparing to take an international exam at the end of their studies at the age of just 12. So don't be surprised there, but prepare!
One of the hardest tasks for the young 'exam takers' is writing a critical essay. The teachers often witness that the young 'exam takers' are not cognitively ready or lack critical thinking skills to manage the exam task. So when do we, as teachers, need to start extending their critical thinking abilities, and what's more important, how can we do that? Let's come up with some effective strategies together.

13.15. - 14.15. Mastering Clear and Effective Teacher Instructions
Valeriia Sydorenko
As teachers, we put a lot of effort into the lesson preparation. We want our lessons to be interesting and effective for our students. But sometimes something goes wrong. You have planned a perfect activity, but students do something different or don’t do anything at all! Why does it happen? One of the possible answers is instructions. In this session,, we will look at some common issues with instructions and try to come up with solutions that will help you.
Key takeaways:
- Common issues with instructions and the reasons for them
- Strategies and techniques for giving instructions
- Ways of checking instruction understanding
14.15. - 15.15. Troubleshooting for Speaking Lessons
Iryna Chernivchan
Do you know something that ESL teachers can passionately love or desperately hate but never be indifferent to? The answer is teaching Speaking. Such a fancy skill that all students want to acquire! We usually hear: "I want to speak, I don't need boring grammar rules. They are useless!".
However, what is Speaking? How do we understand that someone can speak? How do we, as teachers, identify a speaking task?
It is far beyond a simple heading above the last task with 3 open-ended questions about the topic.
In this session, we will:
- identify speaking as a skill
- discuss the differences between practicing through speaking and for speaking
- and look through some tips for your students' speaking skills improvement.
15.15. - 15.30 Info break
15.30 - 16.30 Assessing FCE writing tasks
Nataliia Shcherbakova
As we know, writing is a productive skill that most students find challenging to master. It is even more challenging for teachers who evaluate the written work of their students, especially when it comes to FCE written assignments.
Designed to cater to English learners striving to reach an upper-intermediate level, FCE writing tasks require a careful balance of linguistic competence, creativity, and critical thinking. Our session will provide you with the tools and insights needed to assess these tasks with precision, fairness, and a keen eye for identifying areas of improvement.
In this session, we will:
- delve into the FCE writing assessment criteria
- learn how to use them to grade your students’ assignments and provide meaningful and constructive feedback
- unravel the mysteries of evaluating coherence, cohesion, vocabulary, grammar, and task achievement, ensuring that your students excel in their FCE writing attempts
16.30 - 17.30 Facilitating listening tasks
Ruslana Kostiuk
It seems to be quite impossible to go through a day without listening to something. English lessons are not an exception as we regularly play audio files in class. Yet, no matter how often it is done there are people who either find it difficult to comprehend a message or get bored with completing similar tasks time after time. That is why there is a need to help our students, jazz up their auditory experience and discover new ways of adjusting exercises.
In this session, we are going to:
• review the reasons why listening is challenging
• look at a set of pre/while-listening activities
• evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the tasks
• examine various tools that could come in handy
