Who is Module 1 for?

DELTA Module One is an examination which you prepare for and take in an authorised centre, and get a certificate from Cambridge afterwards.

This module focuses on the basis of English language teaching and learning in a range of contexts. As a rule, this module is taken in order to deepen the theoretical background and acquire a more solid understanding of methods and approaches to language teaching, students’ needs and difficulties in language acquisition, teaching resources and materials, assessment and testing.

• Theoretical perspectives on language acquisition and language teaching
• Different approaches and methodologies, including current developments
• Language systems and learners’ linguistic problems
• Language skills and learners’ problems
• Knowledge of resources, materials and reference sources for language learning
• Key concepts and terminology related to assessment

Assessment

The exam consists of two writing papers, each 90 minutes long, with a 30-minute break in-between. It is conducted in an authorised Cambridge Assessment English centre twice a year — in June and December.

Preparation

Welcome to DELTA Module One preparation course in our centre:

• Experienced tutors

Entry requirements for DELTA Module 1 candidates:

• Age: 20+ (candidates aged 18 and above can also be enrolled if they succeed in the interview)
• Having a C1 or C2 level of English
• Theoretical background in teaching methods
• At least one year’s experience of teaching English
• Having a CELTA certificate is recommended

Who is Module 2 for?

DELTA Module Two is a 200-hour course containing a solid theoretical framework and giving an opportunity to use theory in practice.

The course consists of inputs from tutors, delivering lessons, receiving feedback and writing assignments. This course will help you as a teacher to master your teaching practice, learn new methods and approaches, focus on students’ needs, adapt materials, analyse your work, conduct research, and be able to scientifically justify this or that teaching technique.

This module focuses on the principles and practice of planning and teaching.

Taking DELTA Module 2 is a serious and important step in a teacher’s career if you want to develop in the academic teaching area, as well as improve your understanding of how different teaching methods influence learning outcomes and how teaching can be adjusted to achieve learning goals.

Assessment

Assessment at DELTA Module Two takes place throughout the course in an authorised centre by way of delivering lessons (LSA) and writing courseworks and essays.

LSA (Language Systems/Skills Assignment) — is an assignment that includes a lesson with a specific focus, which can be aimed at developing language skills (Speaking, Listening, Writing, Reading) or systems (Grammar, Lexis, Phonology, Discourse).

During the course, you deliver 4 lessons 45–60 minutes each, three out of which are assessed by the course tutors, and the fourth one is assessed by an external Cambridge Assessor.

While preparing for each lesson, you need to conduct research and write a paper of 2,500 words (a background essay), which will be the background for the lesson aimed at developing a certain skill or system. You also have to prepare an elaborate lesson plan.

After delivering a lesson, you conduct analysis of your work, where you identify your strengths and weaknesses, the result of your actions, and suggest ideas on further improvement.
During the course, you also have to write a Professional Development Assignment, which consists of two written tasks:

• Reflection & Action (2000–2500 words)
• Experimental Practice (1500–2000 words)

Course Content

Entry requirements for DELTA Module 2 candidates:

• Age: 20+
• Having a minimum CEFR Level of high C1 or C2
• Theoretical background knowledge in teaching methods
• At least three years of teaching experience
• Being CELTA-certified

Option One

ELT Specialism

Extended practice and ELT (English Language Teaching) specialism

This module is devoted to students’ needs analysis, course programs design, planning and course assessment in the context of your chosen direction.

Topics

• Research into specialist areas
• Designing syllabus and teaching programmes to meet the needs of learners in the specific context of the selected specialism
• Course design and development in the specific context of the selected specialism
• The principles and practice of testing and assessment and their application to the candidate’s specialist area
• Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness and quality of courses and programmes of study

Option Two

ELT Management Specialism

Management in English language teaching

This module is focused on situation analysis, planning and implementing changes in the context of a chosen specialist area.

Topics

• Research into a chosen management specialism
• Methods of situation analysis
• Design of change proposals
• Implementation of change proposals.

In order to succeed in the module on management in ELT, candidates need to have access to managerial information in a relevant language teaching context.

Assessment

Module 3 is an extended written assignment of 4,000–4,500 words, leaving out the appendix. Your assignment will be marked by a team of Cambridge examiners guided and monitored by the Principal Examiner.

Apart from this, all assignments are checked for plagiarism. Therefore, it is necessary to complete the assignment responsibly and consciously.

Assignments are submitted through an authorised centre of Cambridge Assessment English twice a year — in winter and summer.

In Option One, assessment is focused on the specialist area of teaching and learning chosen by the candidate (for instance, English for Academic Purposes, conducting exam preparation classes, younger pupils, individual classes, etc).

In Option Two, candidates research a chosen specialism in ELT Management: academic management, HR, client-service, marketing.
